our story

Mel is the owner and creator of the entire LoCou range, born from the idea that people think of hairdressing as an uneducated craft, when in fact, there’s a lot of science behind haircare.

Mount Eliza entrepreneurial hairdresser Melissa Niblock-Bell, aka Mel Bell, started her hairdressing career at the age of 15. Five years later she opened her first salon and 13 years ago, opened her second salon in Mt Eliza which is where you will find the home of LoCou.

With over a couple of decades of experience as a Master Hairstylist and Colourist, Mel came across inconsistencies within the haircare industry, where she was expected to recommend products that contained a host of barely pronounceable ingredients. Mel knew it was time for a change.

Combining nature, science and hair, each LoCou formula contains key ingredients that truly transform your hair, achieving remarkable results. The entire LoCou range is free from any nasties including no silicone, sulphates, parabens, ethoxylates, paragons, propylene glycol, petrochemical cleansers, phthalates, DEA and artificial colours.

The LoCou range is an earth-loving brand: 100% Australian made, natural, eco-friendly, vegan, organic, professional hair products. The range is not tested on animals, has refill options and uses sustainable packaging. Transforming hair, ethically and sustainably, one bottle at a time.

We’re strictly against testing on animals and are cruelty-free.

However, Mel and LoCou did not stop there. Mel wanted to break the glass ceiling! Introducing the revolutionary Black Shampoo.

Her product, LoCou Black – created over three years after trying 58 formulations in her kitchen at home on mannequins adorned with real human hair – fills and tones using primary colours rather than the traditional purple, which can build up in lightened hair and appear darker. Mel then employed a Melbourne scientist, and spent the next 18 months experimenting and perfecting the formula to create the revolutionary Black Shampoo to add to the LoCou range.

It’s specifically formulated to tone the brassiness out of blonde and brunette hair. Users will notice less yellow and brighter results after their first wash.

Traditional black hair colouration is made up of the primary colours red, yellow and blue. This allows for filling and toning pre-lightened hair. It doesn’t overtone, however it leaves hair with a softer, brighter finish, rather than a pure purple or blue tone.

If that isn’t enough for one product, along with the rest of the range, it too is vegan and organic and includes hemp seed extract to naturally nourish the hair at the same time as brighten it!
